Description of Lincoln Square
Just 9% of Lincoln Square's current inhabitants claim German ancestry and just 600 of the community area's 42,000 inhabitants speak German, but in today's Chicago this is a sizeable percentage and it is not at all uncommon to hear German spoken in, for instance, the landmark Merz Apothecary (now a purveyor of fashionable European cosmetics and household products), or the classic Chicago Brauhaus. Many smaller businesses also cater to the German connection. Also nearby, the Old Town School of Folk Music offers year-round ethnic concerts and music classes. Architecture buffs should make point of seeing Louis Sullivan's last commision, the facade of the Krause Music store, the interior of which is today a small store and museum devoted to Chicago architecture and history.
