At the heart of Chicago's urban, troubled South Side, Englewood is a community with a vibrant character and a strong spirit. The community weathered a rough road through the 20th Century of declining economic conditions, abrupt demographic changes, and deteriorating living circumstances, and today remains one of Chicago's poorist. Nonetheless, Englewood boasts impressive vintage architecture, including a number of Italianate structures, and more than 20 churches and congregations, several in striking landmark buildings. As an official Chicago Community Area, Englewood is differentiated from West Englewood to its west.
