Since shortly after the Chicago fire, the Gold Coast has served as Chicago's premier residential locale. Today its ornate vintage rowhouses share the streets with towering modern condoniniums. The Astor Street Historic District includes historical and archtiectural treasures, such as an early Frank Lloyd Wright project: the James Charnley House (pictured), designed while Wright still worked for Adler & Sullivan. The neighborhood's Oak Street shopping district has a Beverly Hills-like atmosphere, and a thriving nightclub scene on and near Rush Street has had popularity for several decades.
