Known for fabulous estates, a charming, historic shopping center, and a distinguished Liberal Arts college, Lake Forest marks the northern vanguard of the North Shore Suburbs. Flanked along the lakeshore axis by two military bases -- the Great Lakes Naval Base to its north, and Fort Sheridan, now decomissioned and converted into residential housing, to its south, Lake Forest extends quite a ways to the west and its exclusivity continues into its neighborhoods there. West of there Central Lake County begins, which has an altogether different character.
