Perhaps best known for its shopping -- Schaumburg's sprawling terrain has an abundance of roadside stores and a number of indoor malls -- the village is in some respects a fairly typical Northwest Chicagoland suburb. It has a fair number of people of Asian descent and some Hispanics and African-Americans as well, but it is mainly non-Hispanic white (75%). The character of its built environment feels somewhat reminiscent of Californian sprawl, but compared to the drab Americana bungalow-world that dominates some of Chicagoland's suburbia, modern mid-rises and ethnic restaurants in strip malls can seem refreshing.
