The cultural and physical terrain of the
City of Chicago's Far North region highlights its character
as borderland and cultural crossroads. The geography includes
northerly portions of the city annexed later in its history,
as well as lakefront beaches that have seen times of boom
and bust and much in between. Charming ethnic enclaves abut
wild stretches of park and grasslands. Major centers of learning
thrive not far from major centers of industry, and many pockets
of the Far North are filled with gracious memorials to generations
past. Architecture here is less known but no less spectacular
than in other parts of Chicago, whether in the campaniles
of Romanesque churches or the ornamental embellishments of
residential dwellings.
